Introducing: MOD CHAIR X

Leda Chair - Salvador Dali

What is a sculptural chair?

Leda Chair - Salvador Dali

The functional design of a chair leads itself to have a basic structure of legs, body and a backrest (with armrests). This allows the weight distribution of a seated body to be optimal. Now taking that a step further, some aspects of sculpture design (form, space, narrative) can be incorporated to re-define a basic chair design.

Building on the sculptural language developed at my studio (Abid Javed), the chair design was concieved around the concept of mitochondrial genetic body.

Biomorphic.

Modular.

Biology inspired

Taking reference from the dynamics of genetic complexes inside a cell (including mitochondria), the Mod Chair design has legs that are in an array of 3 or 4 legs, biomorphic in form, connected to a body. This is then attached to another component with a backrest, showcasing the connection between two molecular elements as well as sculptural elements coming together as one.

Handmade in Clay.

Chair in an unconventional yet familiar material.

A material rooted to our everyday lives, ceramic objects have served us for centuries. It is only time to expand and re-imagine the properties of clay as a material in design objects.

Modular and sculptural

In an edition of 2: The two chair designs showcased during London Design Festival 2024 serve as initial steps of thinking around sculptural and modular concepts applied to a functional object.
